Genome-Wide Association Analysis and Genetic Parameters for Feed Efficiency and Related Traits in Yorkshire and Duroc Pigs

Background

Feed efficiency traits are economically important in pig production, but their genetic architecture remains insufficiently understood. This study focused on average daily feed intake, average daily gain, feed conversion ratio, and residual feed intake.

Results

Using genotype data from Duroc and Yorkshire pigs, the study performed genome-wide association analysis and estimated genetic parameters for feed-efficiency-related traits. Heritability estimates ranged from 0.13 to 0.36, and significant genetic correlations were observed between feed efficiency and growth traits. The analysis identified 61 significant SNPs and 35 candidate genes, including well-known genes such as MC4R and INSR.

Conclusion

The results deepen the understanding of the genetic mechanisms underlying feed efficiency in pigs and provide useful information for marker-assisted selection.
